Alireza joined the lab in August 2024 as a joint postdoctoral researcher with Eric (at Helmholtz Munich) and Peter Dayan (at MPI for Biological Cybernetics). Before moving to Germany, he completed his Ph.D. in Computer and Communication Sciences at EPFL under the supervision of Wulfram Gerstner. His general research interests lie at the intersection of computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and machine learning, with a focus on developing computational models of learning and decision-making in the brain. In the past years, he has worked on (i) mathematical definitions of surprise and novelty, (ii) their contributions to human exploratory and adaptive behavior, and (iii) their manifestation in physiological measurements.
